Knoll Cottage Quintessence, Jones-L., '21
Tetraploid, Dormant, 30" tall, Midseason, 5" flower.
Reblooms - passes this trait along.
2 way branching, 7 bud count, (I have seen better branching, and bud count) pod and pollen fertile, no fragrance.
What ‘Knoll Cottage Quintessence’ lacks in branching, and bud count; more than makes up for it in re-bloom qualities. I would consider this daylily to be either a hybridizer’s daylily, for getting more rebloom in the North, or a landscape plant.
The outstanding feature of ‘Knoll Cottage Quintessence’ is its re-blooming characteristics; with the ability to pass this trait to offspring’s’, who in turn can pass it back to each other. ‘Knoll Cottage Quintessence’ also passes on reblooming to daylilies not genetically related, that are northern rebloomers.
‘Knoll Cottage Quintessence’ has the ability to make new fans, and in the same year have those new fans send up scapes that bloom. The older fans, on occasion, re-bloom which is why I believe it would make for a good landscape plant. In the five years of its existence; it produced a very nice compact clump, and when it was divided, it had multiplied beautifully. Another plus is that it divides easily, and is not multiplying from a single crown.
The color is a medium rose with darker veining in the petals, and a lightly ruffled gold picotee edge. The flower is not fancy, but oh, those genetics.

Having re-bloom in the North is not an easy matter to achieve, but with a little help from ‘Knoll Cottage Quintessence’, I believe we can enjoy re-bloom more and more. The only flaw that I have seen is that it does not appreciate heaving, and thawing conditions. It will bloom, and rebloom, but not as good as with a regular stable cold winter. This past summer, 2023, was an extremely hot summer, and even though I was watering, 'Knoll Cottage Quintessence' only rebloomed once.

This next seedling cross was a sib cross, but I never got a picture of the other 2015 sibling. This was the result using (Knoll Cottage Quintessence X Seedling # 15-1520)

No disrespect for Richard Norris, the hybridizer of ‘Sunshine on My Shoulders’, but I have had two rebloom scapes in four years. I believe it is because of my micro climate. But looking on the bright side, it did connect with ‘Knoll Cottage Quintessence’, and the results are below. Richard Norris told me I should use ‘Sunshine on My Shoulders’, to further along my pursuit of rebloom. I am so grateful for his sharing of information. Here is what that cross gave me for seedlings.
